Energy Savings

Why pump water into your networks at higher pressures than you really need?

That’s the simple logic behind i2O’s energy savings for water companies. Optimising pressure delivers only the right amount of pressure and no more (nor too little), while ensuring you hit agreed customer service levels across the network.

Our CTO Andrew Burrows describes how i2O’s solutions help water companies cut their energy costs:

The energy used by a pump feeding the network is clearly proportional to both the output pressure of the pump (manifold pressure) and the flow rate through the pump. The i2O system, therefore, lowers energy use in two ways: first, it reduces the average pump output pressure; second, it reduces leakage in the zone through lower pressures, which in turn reduces the flow rate through the pump.

For one Romanian water company, installing i2O’s Pump Control solution cut overall energy costs by more than 30%. The i2O PRV control solution also lowers energy costs. By optimising the pressure in the network, leakage is reduced which in turn leads to lower flow rates into the network. This means less water to pump and less energy used.
